Windows 11, how to get the Moment 3 update?

For a few hours, a new Windows 11 cumulative update has been available. Named KB5026446 it is optional. This is a “Preview” of part of the stream planned for the next Patch Tuesday. Better Microsoft is testing the new features of its Moment 3 update.

The KB5026446 update has just appeared in the Windows Update service of Windows 11. Its download and installation are not automatic. This is an “optional” update requiring user intervention. Microsoft offers patches and especially new features.

This content should be considered beta content. For what ? This is a preview of Windows 11 Cumulative Update 22H2 KB5026446. The stable version will be widely deployed on June 13, 2023.

One of the easiest ways to find out if new features are available after installation is to use the IMP key on the keyboard. If it triggers the opening of the “Screen Capture” tool, it’s a good sign. Otherwise the IMP key will trigger a copy of the screen to the clipboard.”

Another option is to launch Task Manager ( Ctlr+Shift+Esc) to go to the Details tab. Then right-click on the system process to check if the option to create a “real-time kernel memory dump” file is possible.

In most cases it is possible to recover Moments 3 by activating the option ” receive the latest updates as soon as they are available” before running a check for updates or installing this preview. In our case the option allowed to activate the functionalities after the manual installation of KB5026446. A second reboot was required.

If your system does not offer new after installing KB5026446, you can also try this trick

  • Download the latest version of ViVeTool via > GitHub,
  • Unpack the archive into a folder and copy its path to the clipboard.
  • Then using the Terminal go to the directory in question using the command cd + path copied to the clipboard.
  • Finally run the command ./vivetool /enable /id:4165523.

A restart of the PC is required for the changes to take effect.

You can also grab the update manually for offline installation. It is available on the Microsoft Catalog Update distribution channel.

KB5026446 and its contents

Regarding its content Microsoft does not give much information. Its installation allows Windows 11 22H2 to evolve to version 22621.1778. You can check this number by running “winver.exe” in Executer.

The release note mentions only two new features

  • The full storage capacity of all Microsoft OneDrive subscriptions is available on the Accounts page of the Settings app.
  • Bluetooth Low Energy (LE) Audio technology is supported for improved audio fidelity and battery life.

It is probably automatically activated on all devices, which is not the case for the rest. The content suite aims to strengthen the reliability of the OS with numerous patches and fixes. They cover many areas. We can quote

  • The narrator,
  • The Edge browser,
  • audio playback,
  • The touch keyboard
  • Searchindexer.exe, SMB (Server Message Block), the LSASS service (Local Security Authority Subsystem Service) or even the event viewer.
